Ensuring Seamless Coverage: ATIA's Push for Permanent Insurance Sales Authorisation

The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) is actively campaigning to secure the permanent right for travel agents, tour operators, and accredited travel businesses to sell travel insurance at the time of booking.
This initiative follows an exemption granted in 2021, which is set to expire in October 2026.

ATIA argues that allowing travel professionals to offer insurance at the point of booking is crucial for ensuring travellers are adequately protected. By integrating insurance sales into the booking process, travellers can make informed decisions about coverage that aligns with their specific travel plans and potential risks.

Dean Long, CEO of ATIA, emphasised the importance of this initiative: "We secured this exemption for our members in 2021 and we are determined to ensure it is made permanent. This is about protecting the right of accredited Australian travel businesses to provide a complete service to their clients."

For travellers, this means a more streamlined experience where they can receive expert advice on suitable insurance options tailored to their itineraries. It also reduces the risk of travellers neglecting to purchase insurance or selecting inadequate coverage after the booking process.

ATIA's push for permanent authorisation reflects a broader commitment to consumer protection and the sustainability of the travel industry. By empowering travel agents to offer comprehensive services, including insurance, at the time of booking, both travellers and the industry stand to benefit from enhanced security and confidence in travel planning.
