A new Australian insurance research report published on 21 July 2026 has raised a practical warning for fitness professionals who use AI tools to research business cover: not every confident answer is coming from a reliable or licensed source.

The report examined millions of citation records across Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT insurance-related searches between November 2025 and July 2026. It found that a small group of spam or grey-area websites had been cited in AI-generated insurance responses, despite not holding an Australian Financial Services Licence, not having a verifiable Australian business presence and not being accountable for the guidance they published.

For personal trainers, yoga teachers, pilates instructors, gym owners and group fitness operators, this matters because insurance is not a generic purchase. A policy that looks suitable in an AI summary may still leave gaps if it does not reflect the way you actually work. Mobile outdoor sessions, reformer pilates, children’s classes, subcontracted instructors, nutrition guidance, online programming, equipment use, leased studio space and higher-risk training formats can all affect what needs to be declared and what may be excluded.

ASIC has already warned Australians that general-purpose AI tools can be useful for learning about broad financial topics, but may produce inaccurate or inappropriate suggestions. The safest approach is to treat AI as a starting point for vocabulary, not as the final authority on whether a policy is right for your business.

Before relying on any online recommendation, fitness professionals should check:

  • whether the source is an insurer, licensed broker or adviser, recognised comparison service or regulator-backed resource;
  • whether the policy includes both public liability and professional indemnity where relevant;
  • whether your specific activities, locations, equipment and client groups are covered;
  • whether exclusions, sub-limits, excesses and claims conditions are clearly understood;
  • whether the sum insured still reflects your current business, not last year’s setup.

This story is also an extension of a wider digital-risk theme for fitness businesses. Recent cyber incidents have shown how much sensitive client information health and fitness operators may hold. Now, AI search adds another layer: the risk of making a commercial decision based on content that appears authoritative but may not be properly sourced.

The takeaway is not to avoid technology. AI can help you prepare better questions, understand common policy terms and organise renewal notes. But when it comes to compare cover options, fitness professionals should verify the source, read the policy wording and seek qualified help where the answer affects legal or financial exposure.
