Recent insurance industry commentary has again highlighted the affordability challenge facing Australian policyholders, with premium pressure linked to natural hazard exposure, higher repair costs, reinsurance conditions, claims inflation and state-based charges.
While much of the public debate focuses on households, the same forces can flow through to small trade businesses that rely on public liability, tools, vehicles, workshop contents and income-related cover to keep operating.

For tradies, affordability is not just about whether a premium has gone up. The bigger issue is whether cost pressure leads to decisions that leave the business exposed. Reducing cover, accepting higher excesses or letting a policy lapse may ease cash flow in the short term, but it can create a much larger problem if a claim involves stolen tools, damaged customer property, a vehicle off the road or an injury that stops work.

This is especially important for trades operating in areas exposed to storm, flood, bushfire or cyclone risk, or for businesses with expensive portable gear and vehicles. Insurers are paying close attention to where assets are kept, how they are secured, whether work involves higher-risk activities and whether policy limits still reflect today’s replacement costs. A set of tools bought several years ago may cost far more to replace now, and the same applies to trailers, testing equipment, materials and specialist machinery.

The practical takeaway is to treat renewal as a review, not an automatic payment. Before accepting terms, trade business owners should check whether listed assets, business activities, subcontractor arrangements, job sizes and storage locations are still accurate. It can also be useful to reassess sums insured so that the policy reflects current replacement values rather than old estimates.

Cost control still matters, but it should be balanced against the consequences of being uninsured or underinsured. Improving site security, keeping tool inventories, storing batteries safely, maintaining vehicles, documenting risk procedures and reducing avoidable claims can all help present the business as a better risk. In some cases, adjusting policy structure may be more sensible than simply cutting limits.

Where cover is becoming difficult to interpret or compare, a licensed insurance broker can help explain exclusions, sub-limits, excesses and insurer appetite. That support can be valuable for tradies whose work has changed, who have taken on larger contracts, or who need to meet insurance requirements set by builders, councils, strata managers or commercial clients.

The affordability debate is likely to continue, but tradies do not need to wait for market-wide change before taking action. A careful renewal review, backed by accurate asset values and practical risk controls, can make the difference between paying for cover and having cover that is ready when it is needed.
