Why Cyber Risk Is Becoming a Job-Site Issue for Tradies

Digital payments, mobile devices and supplier accounts can create exposures that traditional trade policies may not address

Recent insurance-sector commentary has put cyber risk back on the small business agenda, with attention turning to invoice fraud, email compromise, stolen devices and the way criminals target everyday payment processes.
For Australian tradies, this is not just an office problem.
Many trade businesses now run quoting, scheduling, banking, supplier accounts and customer communication from a phone, tablet or laptop that travels between the ute, workshop and job site.

The practical issue is that cyber losses can look very different from a broken tool or a damaged vehicle. A compromised email account may allow a criminal to redirect a client payment. A fake supplier message may trick staff into paying the wrong account. A stolen device may expose customer details, job records or photos of worksites. Even a short lockout from cloud software can interrupt quoting, invoicing and cash flow.

For tradies reviewing their types of insurance, the key lesson is to avoid assuming that every business interruption or financial loss will sit neatly inside an existing policy. Public liability is generally focused on third-party injury or property damage. Tools cover is generally about physical items. Commercial vehicle insurance is usually about the ute, van or truck. Cyber-related loss may require separate consideration, depending on the business, insurer and policy wording.

Cyber insurance is not a substitute for good controls, but it can be part of a broader risk plan. Useful steps for small trade businesses include:

  • turning on multi-factor authentication for email, banking and accounting platforms;
  • checking payment detail changes by phone using a trusted contact number;
  • limiting who can approve supplier payments or refunds;
  • keeping devices updated and protected with strong passwords;
  • backing up key job, invoice and customer records; and
  • training apprentices, admin staff and subcontractors to spot suspicious messages.

Insurance reviews should also consider the evidence a claim may require. If a payment redirection occurs, records of invoices, emails, bank transfers, verification calls and incident response steps may all matter. If a device is stolen, a tradie may need to show what data was stored, whether it was protected, and what actions were taken after the loss.

The main takeaway is straightforward: as trade businesses become more digital, their risk profile changes. A practical renewal discussion should cover physical assets, liability, vehicles, income exposure and digital systems together. Where the wording is unclear, speaking with a licensed broker or adviser can help identify whether cyber-related exposures are being addressed or left as an uninsured gap.

Renewed attention on strata governance in New South Wales is a timely reminder that insurance disclosure is now a front-line renewal issue for owners corporations, not a back-office formality. Fresh life insurance performance data from APRA points to a market that is steadier than the disrupted conditions seen in recent years, but not one where employers can afford to be passive. For CFOs, HR leaders and directors, the message is less about a single quarterly result and more about the operating environment behind corporate life insurance pricing, claims service and product design. - read more

A fresh push to reform how NSW funds emergency services has put insurance affordability back in the spotlight, especially for small businesses that already feel every increase at renewal time.
